Who Is the Holy Spirit? (Creed Part 3)

Sunday, May 17, 2026

Big Idea

God didn't leave a manual and disappear — he left himself.

Hook — The Invisible Guide

Ask: "Have you ever played a game where you can feel someone guiding you, but you can't see them?" Video game NPC leading you somewhere. A GPS that recalculates when you take a wrong turn. It's not controlling you — it's guiding you. The Holy Spirit is like that, but real.

Scripture — John 14:15-27 and Acts 2:1-13

John 14:15-17, 25-27

"If you love me, keep my commands. And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you."

"All this I have spoken while still with you. But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid."

Acts 2:1-4

When the day of Pentecost came, they were all together in one place. Suddenly a sound like the blowing of a violent wind came from heaven and filled the whole house where they were sitting. They saw what seemed to be tongues of fire that separated and came to rest on each of them. All of them were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them.

Connect — The Force vs. The Holy Spirit

Everyone knows Star Wars. The Force is "an energy field created by all living things. It surrounds us, penetrates us, binds the galaxy together."

The Force is impersonal. It doesn't love you. It doesn't have a will. It's just there.

The Holy Spirit is a person. He grieves when you grieve. He convicts you when you're wrong. He comforts you when you're hurting. He's God, living inside you — not a mystical power you tap into.

Ask: "What's the difference? Why does it matter?"

Land the Plane

"You have access to the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. He's in you right now — not to make you weird, but to make you brave. The same power that started the church on Pentecost is available to you when you walk into your school on Monday morning. So here's a real challenge: wherever you stand with God currently, even if you doubt he exists, if you take what you do understand about him and focus on him for a minute once every hour every day for a month, your life will change. Don't take my word for it — try it."

Discussion Questions

  1. Have you ever felt like God was guiding you? What was that like?
  2. Why do you think the Spirit shows up as wind and fire in Acts 2, but as a gentle voice in other places?
  3. What's one situation in your life right now where you could use the Spirit's guidance?

Handout

One Thing to Remember: God didn't leave a manual and disappear — he left himself.

Two Ways to Think About It

The Force (Star Wars)The Holy Spirit
Personal or impersonal?
Can it love you?
Does it have a will?
Can you have a relationship with it?
Does it guide you or control you?

Exercise: The GPS Recalculates

A GPS doesn't control where you drive — but when you take a wrong turn, it recalculates. The Holy Spirit works the same way. Think about this week. Was there a moment when you felt a "recalculation" — a nudge to stop, to say something, to not do something?

Exercise: Before and After

In Acts 2, the disciples were transformed. Same guys, same fears, different power. Fill in what you want the Spirit to transform in your own life — school, friendships, family, fear/anxiety, something you're hiding.

Exercise: "Another Advocate"

Jesus said he would send "another advocate." The Greek word is parakletos — literally "one called alongside." Not someone ahead of you or behind you. Beside you. For each day this week, write ONE specific situation where you could use someone beside you.

This Week's Challenge

Wherever you stand with God currently, take what you do understand about him and focus on him for a minute once every hour every day for a month. Set a phone alarm. When it goes off, pause for 60 seconds and think about one thing you know about God. Also: before you make any decision this week, pause for 10 seconds and ask: "Spirit, what do you think?"

Scripture for Next Week

Come with one note and one question.

Reflection Guide

Core Question for Reflection

You have access to the same Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead. What would change in your daily life if you actually believed that?

Questions to Help You Dig Deeper

  1. The Force vs. The Holy Spirit — The Force in Star Wars is impersonal — an energy field. The Holy Spirit is a person. Why does that difference matter in real life?
  2. The GPS Recalculates — Was there a moment this week when you felt a "recalculation" — a nudge to stop, say something, or not do something? Did you follow it or ignore it?
  3. Before and After — The disciples went from hiding in a room to preaching in the streets. What area of your life do you want the Spirit to transform?
  4. The Hourly Challenge — Set a phone alarm for every hour. Pause for 60 seconds and think about one thing you know about God. Try it for a month. What's your honest reaction?
